Method
How to calculate plywood waste percentage
Add the areas of the panels needed at one time, using net dimensions after deductions. Enter the dimensions and count of the sheets allocated to those panels. This comparison assumes all sheets have the same dimensions.
- Sheet area = sheet length × sheet width
- Purchased area = sheet area × purchased sheet count
- Excess area = purchased area − required panel area, when positive
- Utilization (%) = required panel area ÷ purchased area × 100, when area is sufficient
- Theoretical waste (%) = excess area ÷ purchased area × 100
If required area exceeds purchased area, the calculator reports the difference as a shortfall and suppresses the waste and utilization percentages.
Worked example
90 m² of panels from 34 sheets
A 1220 × 2440 mm sheet contains 2.9768 m². With 34 sheets, purchased area is 101.2112 m². For 90 m² of panels, the excess is 11.2112 m²: approximately 88.923% utilization and 11.077% theoretical waste.
With only 30 of those sheets, purchased area falls to 89.304 m² and the shortfall is 0.696 m². Even sufficient total area still needs a feasible cutting layout.
Scope
Waste allowance and waste percentage are different
A procurement allowance is usually added to the required area. This tool measures excess as a share of purchased area. For example, buying 110 m² for 100 m² of panels adds a 10% allowance, but the theoretical waste is 10 ÷ 110 × 100 = 9.091%.

Assumptions and limitations
- Required area is supplied by you; this calculator does not derive panels from concrete geometry.
- One sheet size and one allocation are compared at a time.
- Excess area is not a count of offcuts or a prediction of discarded waste.
- Cut dimensions, kerf, grain direction, trimming, damage, and sequencing may increase actual material needs.
- No structural formwork design or reuse-cycle assumptions are included.
Formwork panel waste FAQ
Does zero waste mean my cutting layout will fit?
No. Equal areas do not establish geometric fit. Individual panels may be too long or wide, and saw cuts remove material.
Can I count the excess as reusable offcuts?
Not from area alone. Offcut dimensions, condition, grain requirements, and future panel sizes determine whether the material can be reused.
Should I add a waste allowance to required panel area?
No. Enter the net area of the panels themselves. Adding an allowance there would overstate utilization and understate excess.
Does switching to Imperial choose 4 × 8 ft sheets?
No. Unit switching converts the current physical dimensions. Choose the 4 × 8 ft preset explicitly if that is the product you are buying; it differs slightly from 1220 × 2440 mm.
