How much does a concrete block weigh?

A concrete block has no single standard weight. For example, Basalite lists one 8×8×16 standard block at 40 lb, while other block designs can weigh less. Use your exact product’s listed unit weight—not its nominal size alone.

Why an “8-inch block” is not one weight

An “8×8×16” CMU is a nominal size for masonry layout. The standard unit in the table below is actually listed at 7⅝ × 15⅝ × 7⅝ in; the difference allows for the mortar-joint module. CMHA explains nominal and specified dimensions. Neither nominal nor actual outside dimensions determine unit weight by themselves: cores, face shells, webs, aggregate, and product design also matter. CMHA’s concrete-density classes are not exact per-block weights.

Get a weight you can actually use

    Match the product

    Confirm the manufacturer, product name, unit shape, dimensions, finish, and region. A standard building block and a specialty fence unit are not interchangeable.

    Read the unit weight

    Use the weight explicitly listed per unit. Do not estimate it from outside dimensions or a density-class label alone.

    Separate the quantities

    Keep the base blocks required for the wall apart from extra blocks ordered for cuts or breakage. Ask the supplier about pallet and packaging weights if handling or delivery is the decision.

From block count to blocks-only weight

Suppose the Concrete Block Calculator gives you 120 base blocks, and your selected product is the Basalite 8×8×16 standard building block listed at 40 lb per unit.

That is the arithmetic for the blocks alone (about 2,177 kg), before any additional order allowance. If your order quantity differs from the base count, multiply the actual number ordered by the product’s unit weight for a blocks-only order estimate. Pallets, mortar, grout, reinforcement, and other materials are excluded.

This is not a finished-wall dead-load calculation or a safe lifting, storage, vehicle, or trailer-capacity decision. Confirm those requirements with the supplier and qualified project professionals.
