Method
How to calculate roof area with pitch
A roof’s horizontal plan area is its footprint viewed from above. The sloped surface is larger unless the roof is flat. For a rectangular section, first multiply its horizontal projected length by its horizontal projected width. Include the projected eave and rake overhangs you intend to cover.
- Horizontal plan area Ap = projected length × projected width
- Slope ratio r = rise ÷ run, or slope percent ÷ 100
- Slope factor k = √(1 + r²)
- Sloped roof area As = Ap × k
- Total roof area = sum of the sloped areas for every section
When pitch is entered as an angle θ above horizontal, the factor is 1 ÷ cos(θ). An area already measured on the roof surface is added directly and receives no pitch adjustment. This prevents the same slope from being counted twice.
Worked examples
Metric and Imperial roof-area examples
A 10 m × 8 m horizontal projection has 80 m² of plan area. At a 25% slope, the factor is √(1 + 0.25²), or about 1.030776. The sloped surface area is therefore 82.462 m².
A 40 ft × 30 ft projection has 1,200 ft² of plan area. At 6:12 pitch, the factor is √1.25, or about 1.118034. The sloped roof area is 1,341.641 ft², equal to about 124.643 m² or 13.416 roofing squares.
If a second section was measured directly as 20 m² on its sloped surface, add that 20 m² as a separate measured-sloped section. Do not give it another pitch multiplier.
Split mixed roofs into measured sections
Use one section for each roof plane or group that has a different pitch or measurement basis. A simple gable roof commonly has two rectangular projections. A hip, valley, dormer, addition, or offset ridge may require several measured sections from the drawings or site.
The calculator does not add a generic multiplier for a roof-shape name. Shape alone does not identify every edge, opening, intersection, or pitch. Breaking the outline into measured areas keeps the quantity traceable and avoids a hidden complexity factor.
Roof square footage and roofing squares
The same physical result is shown in metric and Imperial units. One international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m². See the NIST conversion-factor reference.
In roofing usage, one roofing square represents 100 ft² of roof surface. The calculator divides geometric roof square footage by 100; it does not round the answer into bundles, sheets, rolls, or other packages. GAF’s roofing-square explanation provides this area definition. Neither source certifies this calculator or the measurements entered.
“Roof space” can mean several different things. This calculator measures the exterior sloped roof surface for quantity planning. It does not calculate attic or loft volume and usable headroom, or determine solar-panel fit, obstructions, setbacks, orientation, panel count, or system capacity.
Geometric area, allowance, and material quantity
The geometric sloped area is the direct BOQ quantity for roof covering area. The optional percentage creates a separate planning scenario; it never changes the measured geometry. The appropriate allowance depends on the product, layout, cuts, roof details, handling, and ordering rules, so the tool supplies no universal default.
Material quantities need more information than roof area. Metal panels require effective cover width, panel direction, end laps, and stock lengths. Assumptions and limitations
- Projected dimensions are horizontal, not lengths measured along the slope.
- Each pitch-adjusted section is one plane with a constant slope.
- Entered outlines already include any overhang projections the user intends to cover.
- Openings, penetrations, vertical upstands, flashings, ridges, hips, valleys, and gutters are not added or deducted automatically.
- The result does not determine roof drainage, ventilation, framing, structural adequacy, fall-protection procedure, or code compliance.
Roof area calculator FAQ
Is roof square footage the same as floor area?
No. Floor area does not automatically include roof overhangs, and the roof surface grows with pitch. Measure the horizontal roof outline, including intended overhang projection, then apply the pitch of each section.
Do I multiply both sides of a gable roof?
Yes, if your length and projected width describe only one side. Add two identical sections for a symmetrical gable, or enter the total horizontal plan area for both sides once and apply their common pitch.
Can I calculate a hip roof with this tool?
Yes, when you know the horizontal projected area and pitch of each plane. Add the planes as separate sections. The calculator does not infer hip geometry from building length and width alone.
What if I already know the sloped roof area?
Select “Known measured sloped area.” That value enters the total directly, without another pitch factor.
What is a roofing square?
It is an area equal to 100 square feet. It is an area unit, not a guaranteed package quantity; product coverage and package counts must be checked separately.
Does the allowance represent waste?
It is a user-selected planning allowance shown separately from geometric area. The calculator does not recommend a percentage or claim that it covers every cutting, breakage, lap, or ordering condition.
Does this calculate roof space for solar panels or attic volume?
No. Exterior roof surface area can be one input to later planning, but solar layout requires panel dimensions, obstructions, clearances, orientation, and other project details. Attic or loft volume requires interior dimensions and a different geometric model.
BOQ use and calculation basis
The primary reusable output is finite totalSlopedRoofAreaM2 in canonical square metres, suitable for a “Roof covering area” line when the measurement basis matches the estimate. Horizontal plan area, pitch contribution, allowance area, and adjusted area remain derived quantities. Roofing squares are a display conversion.
The pure engine uses rectangle geometry and right-triangle trigonometry. It returns unformatted numeric values and keeps supplier coverage, package rounding, rates, and cost outside the calculation.
