Method

How effective roof-sheet width works

The physical width of a profiled sheet includes the edge used to overlap or engage the next sheet. That portion does not add to the repeating installed coverage. Subtracting the stated side lap gives the effective or nominal cover width used for a preliminary sheet count.

  1. Effective cover width = overall sheet width − side-lap width
  2. Fractional sheets = roof width ÷ effective cover width
  3. Whole sheets = fractional sheets, rounded upward
  4. Nominal covered width = whole sheets × effective cover width

Worked example

Example: 1000 mm sheet across a 10 m roof

A 1000 mm overall sheet with a 100 mm side lap has 900 mm of effective cover, or 90% of its physical width. A 10 m roof width requires about 11.111 sheets, so the preliminary order is 12 sheets. Their nominal modular coverage is 10.8 m, leaving 0.8 m of excess cover before edge detailing.

Profile information

Prefer the manufacturer’s published cover width

Profile geometry, interlocking seams, and approved installation details can make nominal cover different from a simple measured overlap. Use the maximum or nominal cover width published for the exact profile whenever it is available. Manufacturer guidance also determines suitable laps, fasteners, sealants, roof slopes, and regional installation requirements.

  • The roof width is measured across the sheets, normally parallel to the eave.
  • The side lap is the total width deducted from each sheet’s repeating nominal cover.
  • The same cover width is assumed across the full roof.
  • Hips, valleys, openings, penetrations, end laps, edge details, damage, and spare sheets are excluded.
  • The result is a preliminary quantity and does not verify weatherproofing or structural suitability.

Common questions

Roof sheet effective width FAQ

What is the difference between overall width and cover width?

Overall width is the sheet’s full physical width. Cover width is the repeating installed width after the side-lap or seam portion is excluded.

Why is the number of sheets rounded up?

Partial sheets cannot cover the remaining roof width without another physical sheet. The result therefore rounds the fractional requirement upward.

Does roof pitch change this calculation?

Not when the entered roof width runs parallel to the eave. Pitch affects the sheet length up the slope, which belongs in the separate panel cut-length calculator.

Does the result include extra sheets for waste?

No. Add project-specific allowances for penetrations, complex roof geometry, cutting damage, transport damage, and supplier ordering rules.
