Method

How to calculate roof sheathing panels

Start with the exterior sloped roof-deck area. If you only know one simple horizontal roof outline and its pitch, the calculator uses the same geometry as the Roof Area Calculator. For hips, valleys, dormers, mixed pitches, additions, or irregular planes, calculate and combine the roof sections there first, then enter the known sloped area here.

  1. Panel coverage = panel length × panel width
  2. Base exact panels = net sloped roof area ÷ panel coverage
  3. Allowance area = net roof area × user allowance ÷ 100
  4. Adjusted order area = net roof area + allowance area
  5. Exact adjusted panels = adjusted order area ÷ panel coverage
  6. Whole panels = exact adjusted panels rounded up once to the next whole panel

The result is a theoretical area-based quantity. It does not arrange panel seams or determine whether cut pieces can be reused across the roof.

Worked examples

Imperial and Metric roof plywood examples

A 40 ft × 30 ft horizontal roof outline at 6:12 pitch has about 1,341.641 ft² of sloped area. With a user-selected 10% allowance, the adjusted order area becomes about 1,475.805 ft². Panels measuring 4 ft × 8 ft theoretically cover 32 ft² each, so the exact requirement is about 46.119 panels and the whole order is 47 panels.

For a known 100 m² sloped roof, 1.22 m × 2.44 m panels cover 2.9768 m² each. With a 10% allowance, 110 ÷ 2.9768 is about 36.952, so the order rounds once to 37 panels. Those panels represent 110.1416 m² of theoretical coverage, leaving 0.1416 m² beyond the allowance-adjusted target.

Roof sheathing, roof decking, plywood, and OSB

For this calculator, roof sheathing and roof decking mean the structural panel layer installed over roof framing. The quantity method works with plywood or OSB when you enter the actual panel dimensions you intend to estimate. It does not apply to outdoor deck boards or profiled structural metal roof deck.

The calculator does not choose the panel material or specification. APA explains that rated sheathing products carry performance and span information. Net area, allowance, and whole-sheet rounding

Net roof-deck area is the measured geometric quantity. The allowance is a separate planning scenario selected by the user. ConstructGauge supplies no universal percentage because roof geometry, framing and seam layout, openings, cuts, panel orientation, product requirements, handling damage, and usable offcuts vary.

Whole-panel rounding happens after the allowance is applied to the combined area. The results show the exact adjusted requirement, whole panels, fractional rounding increment, purchased coverage, and coverage beyond the adjusted target so the order remains auditable.

Panel coverage is not a cutting layout

Area divided by panel area is useful for an initial takeoff, but it cannot prove a feasible panel layout. Real installations depend on framing support, panel orientation, edge support, stagger, seams, openings, roof intersections, and the dimensions of usable cut pieces. Do not treat the reported surplus as guaranteed reusable material.

Metric and Imperial conversions use the international foot relationship documented in the NIST conversion-factor reference. That reference supports the unit relationship; it does not certify this calculator or establish panel suitability.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The entered known area is the exterior sloped roof-deck surface, not living area or an unadjusted floor footprint.
  • Simple outline mode assumes one common pitch across the full horizontal outline and includes only the overhang projection entered by the user.
  • Panel length and width represent theoretical rectangular coverage and must match the product basis the user intends to estimate.
  • Allowance is selected by the user and remains separate from net geometry and whole-panel rounding.
  • Optional cost uses the entered panel rate and currency label; it is not a live supplier quote or installed-roof price.
  • The calculation does not select thickness, grade, span rating, orientation, fastening, support, structural capacity, or code compliance.

How many sheets of plywood do I need for a roof?

Divide the allowance-adjusted sloped roof area by the theoretical area of one panel, then round the final result up to a whole sheet. This calculator keeps the net area, allowance, exact result, and rounded order quantity visible.

Is roof decking the same as roof sheathing?

The terms are often used for the structural panel layer over rafters or trusses. In this calculator they describe the same quantity workflow for user-specified plywood or OSB panels, not outdoor deck boards or profiled metal deck.

Does the calculator assume 4 × 8 sheets?

No. Enter the length and width of the panels you intend to estimate. The 4 ft × 8 ft dimension appears only in the worked Imperial example.

Can I use it for a hip roof?

Yes, when you enter the combined measured sloped area of all roof planes. For complex geometry or mixed pitches, calculate the sections with the Roof Area Calculator first. The tool does not choose an allowance from the roof-shape name.

Does this choose plywood or OSB thickness?

No. Thickness, material, grade, span rating, support spacing, loading, product requirements, and local rules are outside an area-based quantity estimate.

Does the panel count optimize seams and cuts?

No. It is theoretical coverage rounded to whole panels. A buildable layout depends on framing, orientation, support, stagger, openings, intersections, and usable offcuts.
