Method

How to calculate roof shingles and bundles

Start with the exterior sloped roof surface area. If you only have one simple horizontal roof outline and a common pitch, the calculator uses the same verified geometry as the Roof Area Calculator. For mixed pitches, dormers, additions, or irregular planes, calculate and combine those areas there first.

  1. Net roofing squares = net roof area in ft² ÷ 100
  2. Allowance area = net roof area × user allowance ÷ 100
  3. Adjusted order area = net roof area + allowance area
  4. Exact field bundles = adjusted order area ÷ manufacturer coverage per bundle
  5. Whole field bundles = exact field bundles rounded up once to the next whole bundle

If packaging states bundles per roofing square, the calculator converts that value into coverage per bundle. It does not assume that every asphalt shingle product has the same packaging.

Worked examples

Roofing squares and bundle examples

A measured 2,000 ft² roof equals 20 roofing squares. With a user-selected 10% allowance, the adjusted order area is 2,200 ft² or 22 squares. If the selected product states three bundles per square, the exact and whole order quantities are both 66 field-shingle bundles.

The physically equivalent Metric input is 185.80608 m². It produces the same 66-bundle result with the same allowance and packaging. If a product instead states exactly 33.3 ft² of coverage per bundle, 2,200 ÷ 33.3 is about 66.066, so the whole order becomes 67 bundles. This is why the product packaging input remains visible.

Net roof area, allowance, and package rounding

The net sloped area is the measured geometric quantity. The allowance is a separate scenario selected by the user; ConstructGauge supplies no universal percentage because roof geometry, installation method, product instructions, breakage, color-lot planning, and usable offcuts vary.

Whole-bundle rounding happens after the allowance and product coverage are applied. The calculator reports the exact bundle requirement, the whole bundles to order, the fractional increment added by rounding, and the coverage represented by that rounded quantity so the procurement step stays auditable.

Field shingles and roofing accessories are separate

This result covers the main field-shingle area only. Starter strips follow eaves and rakes; ridge and hip caps use linear measurements and product-specific coverage; underlayment, flashing, fasteners, ice barriers, ventilation, and penetrations require their own measurements or specifications. They are not hidden inside the field-bundle result.

A roofing square is an area equal to 100 ft² of roof surface. See GAF’s roofing-square explanation. Metric and Imperial conversions use the international foot relationship documented in the NIST conversion-factor reference. These references support the stated unit relationships; they do not certify this calculator or a project’s measurements.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The entered roof area is the exterior sloped surface, not living area or an unadjusted floor footprint.
  • Simple outline mode assumes one common pitch across the entire horizontal outline and includes the overhang projection entered by the user.
  • Manufacturer coverage or bundles per square applies to the selected field-shingle product and must be verified from current packaging or specifications.
  • Allowance is selected by the user and remains separate from net geometry and whole-bundle rounding.
  • Optional cost uses the entered bundle rate and currency label; it is not a live supplier quote or installed-roof price.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Divide the allowance-adjusted roof area by the manufacturer’s installed coverage per bundle, then round the final result up to a whole bundle. This calculator keeps the exact and rounded quantities visible.

How many bundles are in one roofing square?

Check the exact product packaging or specification. Three bundles per square is common for some asphalt shingles, but it is not universal, so the calculator keeps this value editable.

Is a roofing square the same as 100 square feet?

One roofing square represents 100 ft² of roof surface. It is an area unit; the number of bundles needed to cover it depends on the selected product packaging.

Can I use house floor area as roof area?

Not directly. Floor area may omit roof overhangs and does not account for slope. Use the true sloped surface area or calculate a suitable horizontal roof outline and pitch.

Does this work for a hip roof?

Yes, when you enter the combined measured sloped area of all roof planes. For mixed pitches or irregular geometry, calculate the sections with the Roof Area Calculator first. The tool does not select an allowance from the roof-shape name.

Are starter shingles and ridge caps included?

No. The result covers field shingles only. Starter strips, ridge and hip caps, underlayment, flashing, fasteners, and other accessories require separate measurements and product coverage.

BOQ use and calculation basis

The primary reusable result is finite integer wholeFieldBundles, suggested as an “Asphalt field shingles” line when the specified product and allowance match the estimate. Canonical netRoofAreaM2, allowanceAreaM2, and adjustedOrderAreaM2 remain separate selectable area quantities.

The pure engine returns unformatted numeric values and retains the area basis, pitch where applicable, allowance, manufacturer coverage, exact packages, whole-unit rounding, rate, currency label, and cost as distinct concepts. Future BOQ adapters can consume the quantity without parsing the interface or treating adjusted procurement area as net geometry.
